On This Mother's Day, I'm Thinking About ... Ghost Stories

Image
My father was an avid reader and gave me my love for reading, but it was my mother who told me ghost stories. She came from a family and a culture that believed wholeheartedly in ghosts, so she believed in ghosts too. That weird creak from the stairs? Must be a ghost. The strange shadow on the wall when nothing is near? Definitely a ghost. The noise in the middle of the night that almost sounds like someone calling your name? Don’t answer because it is most assuredly a ghost! I will always treasure the memories of me and my mother watching horror movies together on TV. She was of a time that didn’t believe in childhood trauma, so she had no problem letting her five-year-old watch the scariest programs. I will also treasure every ghost story that she told me. All of them were true, she said, and some were so frightening they made my hair stand. I myself am mostly skeptical, but I continue to love ghost stories, so much so that I’m now writing my own. I’ve tried to capture the flavor of ...

It's always lovely to find a new reader review. It's even more wonderful when the reviewer loved all five books in your series! Thank you so much, kind reader! I'm glad you enjoyed the monster-slaying adventures of Joe and Junie, my underdog feng shui consultants. You’re helping your favorite authors to reach new readers. The more, and better, reviews a book has, the higher Amazon’s algorithms will rank it in search results. Even a rating helps! Today, April 4, is the Chinese Qingming Festival

Image
This traditional festival is also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day. It occurs annually on the 15th day after the spring equinox.  Qingming is a time for Chinese people all over the world to honor and thank their ancestors. They observe the festival by tidying, sweeping and/or weeding the graves of their forefathers. They also burn joss paper and incense, and make food offerings at the gravesite (or columbarium, depending on where their deceased relatives reside). According to the Chinese concept of ancestor worship, it’s important to keep your ancestors happy. The ancestors will reward you by blessing your life.  The festival is referenced in my novella Offerings for the Dead .  Read the book for free by subscribing to my newsletter!

On this Day 20 Years Ago ...

Image
Did you know today is the 20th anniversary of the Boxing Day Tsunami?  On Dec. 26, 2004, a major earthquake in Indonesia created a massive tsunami with waves up to 100 feet high. The tsunami swamped the coasts along the Indian Ocean, inflicting wide-scale destruction and killing an estimated 250,000 people in 14 countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. The Boxing Day Tsunami, as it came to be known, is one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history.  Khao Lak, a Thai coastal village, was one of the places devastated.  The movie The Impossible (2012), starring Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland, is based on the horrific true-life experiences of one family who was holidaying in Khao Lak at the time.  I was already living in the U.S. by then, but I have family in Penang (Malaysia). I also vacationed in the past in Langkawi (Malaysia) and Phuket (Thailand). These three islands—Penang, Langkawi and Phuket—saw extensive damage from the ts...

Marking Tonight's Rare Blue Supermoon: A Snippet From 'Under a Hunter's Moon'

Image
Tonight’s full moon is not only a supermoon, but also a blue moon!  It’s a supermoon because it will be closer to the earth, and thus brighter than usual. It’s a seasonal blue moon, being the third full moon in a season with four full moons.  Tonight’s full moon is also known as the sturgeon moon. It seems the giant lake sturgeon is more easily caught at this time of year.  To celebrate, I thought I’d share a snippet from my upcoming novella Under a Hunter’s Moon . The story occurs during a full moon in October.  The novella is now at the proofing stage, so I’m hopeful I can release it soon. It’s an exclusive for my newsletter subscribers.  Click here if you're interested in subscribing. ********** “ Shit! ” She gripped the sides of the window, her mouth hanging open. “What? What?” Vasilyev frowned in confusion. “There’s something loose out there. It just attacked a woman.” “ What?! ” The Russian shoved her away from the slit and peered out. “There’s nothi...

The Hungry Ghost Festival: An Excerpt From 'Joss Paper'

Image
Today, Aug. 18, is the Hungry Ghost Festival, the midpoint of the Hungry Ghost Month when the wall between the world of the living and the realm of the dead is thinnest …  In the spirit of the festival, I thought I'd share an excerpt from my short story “Joss Paper,” about a young woman who is fascinated by the Chinese ritual of offering property and money to the dead during this month. The story is an homage to W.W. Jacobs’s iconic short story “The Monkey’s Paw.” “Joss Paper” is in my collection of ghost stories, titled Joss Paper And Other Horror Stories . The stories are set in Southeast Asia and the U.S., and based on Asian folklore and beliefs. The stories have a Tales From the Crypt vibe ... Please check the book out if you’d like a chill in your summer. The stories are also available to read for free on Amazon's Kindle Unlimited service.  BTW, I highly recommend “The Monkey’s Paw” if you haven’t read it. Masterful, atmospheric, and creepy as heck. The story is reproduc...
